Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgeries are called Blepharoplasties. They are used to correct the ways genetics and aging have affected the appearance of the eyes. When eyes become aged they seem fatigued, angry and sometimes look sad. Eyelid surgery greatly improves the appearance of the entire face and allows the patient's true youth to be seen once again.
Some of the best candidates for eyelid surgery are people who have become unsatisfied with the appearance of their eyes. Generally the patients should be in good health and have a realistic expectation of what the procedure can accomplish.
There are certain medical conditions that are a relative risk factor with Blepharoplasty. Conditions such as high blood pressure, dry eyes and hypothyroidism present some risk, so it's best to inform your surgeon if you suffer from any of these conditions.
The eyelid surgery procedure generally takes between one and three hours, depending on the nature of the operation. The operation begins with the surgeon making small incisions along the natural curves of your eyes, generally starting with the upper lids. Once the skin has opened the doctor begins to remove the fatty deposits and any extra skin or muscle that causes the eyelids to droop. Very detailed sutures then hold the incisions together to tighten and shape sagging skin and muscles.
In certain situations, the doctor makes an incision on the interior of the lower eyelid to remove fatty deposits that don't require skin adjustment. This is known as transconjunctival blepharoplasty and is most often performed on younger people who have thicker and more elastic skin.
